Field trip will meet at the LFG parking lot at 8:00am. Attendees taking their own vehicles can meet us on the north side along the berm of North Shore Road at Mile Marker 16 inside the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
This year’s Geosymposium field trip will be to Anniversary Narrows in the Muddy Mountains Wilderness, adjacent to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, led by Professor Emeritus Steve Rowland. The trip will involve a leisurely hike of approximately three miles, round trip, in Callville Wash. Bring water, comfortable walking shoes, and sun protection. We will return to UNLV by mid-afternoon. Lunch is provided by Capriotti’s Sandwiches. Features to be examined and discussed along the way include the following:
1. Stratigraphy of the Miocene Horse Spring Formation,
2. Borate mining history of the Anniversary Mine,
3. Paleo-liquifaction sedimentary structures in the Horse Spring
Formation, including a truly spectacular injection dike that records
the occurrence of a high-magnitude Miocene earthquake,
4. Hiking through a long, wonderful slot canyon.
