Summer Field Camp
The UNLV Geoscience Department offers an alternative to the traditional field program, by having students complete field camp requirement as two separate, 3 credit courses, culminating to a 3-week crash course in geologic mapping, map preparation, and report writing.
Geosymposium 2026
Each year, the Department of Geoscience hosts their annual Geosymposium. Graduate and undergraduate students present their current research to the department and have the chance to network with industry leaders from a range of geoscience disciplines.

With increasing global demand for energy and natural resources, population increase and global shifts in climate, growing environmental stress through pollutants, and rising population concentration in natural hazard prone coastal regions, it is no surprise that geoscientists are in high demand as an increase in demand is forecast.
Recent reports from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 3% (as fast as average) growth in geoscience jobs from 2024 to 2034. Median pay for Geoscientists in 2024 is approximately $99,000 per year. Geoscientist employment spans a broad range of fields, including securing fossil fuels and alternative energy resources, exploration and management of minerals and natural resources, insuring groundwater quality and supply, promoting preparedness for natural hazards, and stewardship of the environment.
