Professional Background

Dr. Cline received her B.S. in geology from Wisconsin State University at Platteville in 1970. She then spent 11 years exploring for and developing base and precious metal deposits for Inspiration Development Company in the Western United States. She began graduate work at the University of Arizona, where she received an M.S. degree in economic geology in 1986, and she continued her graduate work at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she earned a Ph.D. in 1990. Since then, Dr. Cline has been a faculty member in the department of Geoscience at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and was promoted to Professor in 2002. She is a founding member of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Geological Society of Nevada, and a member of the Society of Economic Geologists, Arizona Geological Society, Geological Society of America, Geochemical Society, and Mineralogical Association of Canada. She is currently an associate editor for Economic Geology. Dr. Cline was named the College of Sciences Distinguished Researcher in 2003, and is the Society of Economic Geologists International Exchange Lecturer for 2004. She has conducted collaborative research projects with Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Placer Dome Exploration, Newmont Gold Corporation, and Round Mountain Gold Corporation. Dr. Cline has been the Project Manager for the UNLV Walking Box Ranch project since 2005, managing the design and implementation of a museum; a field, research, and training center; and ranch renovation.

Research

Research interests include the physical and chemical evolution of hydrothermal ore systems, fluid evolution in magmatic systems, and the use of fluid inclusions to constrain ore deposit evolution. Recent projects have centered on understanding the genesis of Carlin-type and volcanic-hosted gold, Climax-type molybdenum, and porphyry copper systems. Petrography, fluid inclusion analyses, and U-Pb geochronology were recently used to constrain the history of fluid flux at the potential Yucca Mountain high level nuclear waste repository site. Research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and several mining companies including Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Newmont Mining Company, and Placer Dome Exploration.
