The UNLV Geoscience Department
will host its 6th Annual GeoSymposium on April 13th-14th, 2012, at the
Blasco Event Wing in the Foundation Building, UNLV campus. The
symposium is a student-run event, designed to provide graduate and
undergraduate students with an opportunity to present their original
research and receive feedback from industry, civic, and government
professionals, as well as academic experts.
UNLV Geoscience students are planning a two-day event, which will
include student research presentations on Friday, April 13th, and a
field trip on Saturday, April 14th. Oral presentations will be
offered, allowing time for discussion with audience members.
Student poster sessions will be presented throughout the day on the
13th. A review panel will award prizes for the best oral
presentations and posters. The day will conclude with a
post-symposium gathering of all students, faculty, and invited guests
at a reception with food and refreshments, and a silent auction of rock
and mineral specimens. An exact schedule is still being
determined and will be posted below when available.
The field trip will depart from the Lilly Fong Geoscience (LFG) parking
lot at 8:30 a.m. on April 14th. We will explore the Valley of
Fire State Park, approximately one hour from UNLV. The field trip
will cover lithology and paleontology of the park, as well as ancient
and recent cultural history. Stops will include Atlatl Rock,
Beehive formations, and a six mile scenic drive through the park
followed by a one mile hike through White domes. A picnic lunch
will be provided at the conclusion of the White Domes hike, as well as
beverages throughout the trip. There are 21 spaces available for
the field trip, so please register in advance!
The UNLV GeoSymposium will showcase a wide range of important graduate
and undergraduate research, and provide a forum for participating
students to develop presentation skills in a friendly, relaxed
environment. Student research projects include such diverse topics as:
soils, geomorphology, hydrogeology, paleontology, sedimentology,
stratigraphy, geochemistry, volcanology, seismology, structural
geology, and economic geology. We hope that you can join us for
this event!
If you are presenting at
GeoSymposium, you need to fill out an Author Registration Formand anAbstract Submission Form.
After
reviewing the presentation guidelines below, please complete the
Author Registration Form online (found below). This will also
