10/22/07-10/24/07 - ExxonMobil representative, Chuck Calavan, conducted interviews with graduate students from the Geoscience Department.

5/5/07 - The Geologists for a Cure team participated in the 12th annual Komen Southern Nevada Race for the Cure.

4/20/07-4/21/07 - Geoscience students presented the 2nd annual GeoSymposium to showcase student research within the Department.

9/22/06 - Geoscience Welcome to the New Academic Year Dinner in the new Student Union, Room 208A, at 5:30 pm. Obtain a ticket and select your dinner menu option in the Geoscience Office. Donations of $15.00 will be accepted.

9/18/06-9/20/06 - ExxonMobil visits the Department to conduct interviews with graduate students.

3/22/06 - Faculty member raises the bar on geology

3/9/06 - Death Valley Scholarship

Maureen Wruck Panzer (a former student) has established the Death Valley Scholarship ($ 1,500 a year) in honor of her dearest friend Consuelo Emerson.

The annual Death Valley Scholarship shall be awarded to a student (s) meeting the following criteria:

  1. Student must demonstrate financial need through the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA);
  2. Student must complete a UNLV Scholarship Application;
  3. Student must be a graduate student;
  4. Student must major in an M.S. or Ph.D. program offered by the Department of Geoscience;
  5. Students must have a 3.25 cumulative grade point average or higher;
  6. Student must be formally admitted to UNLV; and
  7. Preference will be given to women.

Recipients may reapply for this scholarship in subsequent years, provided they maintain the scholarship criteria and remain in good standing with the institution.

11/18/05 - Faculty member extends soil's research into the Atacama desert of Chile.

Dr. Brenda Buck, with Dr. Jason Rech of Miami University, is trying to figure out what soil processes in the Atacama lead to soil formation and how these processes might used as an analogue for Mars. Dr. Buck and students Mike Howell and Amy Brock recently traveled to Chile to sample soils.



11/11/05 - Faculty member's project with Smithsonian Museum releases soil exhibit promo movie.

Dr. Patrick Drohan has been working for 4 years with the Soil Science Society of America and Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. to develop an exhibit on soil and society. This week, the main fundraising campaign for the exhibit was kicked off with the release of an exhibit  promotional movie.  Visit http://www.soils.org/smithsonian/ To see a low resolution version of the Quicktime movie.
 
10/3/05 - UNLV Department of Geoscience hosts weekend trip to Zion National Park.

The department of Geoscience hosted a trip for UNLV students the weekend of Sept. 30-Oct. 2 to Zion National Park. Students explored the amazing geological features of the park, hiked and camped. For a movie highlighting the trip click here (12 mb).
 

9/19/05 - Faculty and students attend 4th International Symposium on the Cambrian System in Nanjing, China.

Dr. Steve Rowland, along with graduate students Melissa Hicks and Robyn Howley (L-R in image), attended the 4th International Symposium on the Cambrian System in Nanjing, China, August 13 - 24, 2005. Steve, Melissa and Robyn each presented their original work at the meeting and they also attended a pre-meeting field excursion to view the Sinian and Cambrian succession in the Yangtze Gorges region, Hubei Province.

8/12/05 - Dept. of Geoscience welcomes new faculty and staff!

The Department welcomes Dr. Adam Simon and Dr. Joern Jernsletten (Research Staff). Dr. Simon comes to us from Johns Hopkins University and will be pursuing research in High Temperature Geochemistry/Economic
Geology. Dr. Jernsletten comes to us from Norway and will be working as a research staff member for the “Earthquakes in Southern Nevada” project.

8/12/05 - Geoscience newsletter in production again

The Department is working quickly to get into print the Fall edition of the departmental newsletter. The newsletter will highlight departmental activities, research and events. Readers will need Adobe Acrobat’s free reader for the newsletter.

8/12/05 - Faculty working towards characterizing the seismic risk in Las Vegas receive new equipment.

Drs. Catherine Snelson and Wanda Taylor of the Geoscience department and Dr. Barbara Luke of the UNLV Engineering Geophysics Laboratory, recently received funding to pursue the study of “Earthquakes in Southern Nevada”. Funding supported the purchase of a new “mini-vibe” to acquire hugh resolution images of the subsurface down to 500m and an F250 Ford truck and trailer to pull the unit.

8/12/05 - Dept. announces new graduate emphases.

The Department is pleased to announce 4 new graduate emphases under the Geology degree that MS and PhD students may participate in: Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, and Soil Science. More information can be found on the Academics page of this site.
